Effect of progression in malnutrition and inflammatory conditions on adverse events and mortality in patients on maintenance hemodialysis
Blood Purification Apr 07, 2019
Toyoda K, et al. - Researchers assessed the correlations between changes in nutrition and inflammatory conditions in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients and the occurrence of adverse events and mortality. Younger and older MHD patients were compared for changes in each parameter over 2 years time period. Older patients had significantly decreased body mass index (BMI) and serum albumin levels during the observational phase. An associated raised risk for cerebro-cardiovascular disease and hospitalization was observed among patients who showed BMI decline in Kaplan-Meier analysis. An associated higher risk for infectious disease and hospitalization was noted among those who exhibited a decline in albumin. Overall, elderly patients showed a prominent downward trend in nutritional status. In MHD patients, adverse events were reported in relation to changes in nutritional and inflammatory conditions during MHD.
