Effect of obesity on perioperative complications, hospital costs, and length of stay in patients with open ankle fractures
Journal of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons May 30, 2019
Gil JA, et al. - Using data from the National Inpatient Sample, researchers assessed how perioperative complications, as well as the cost of surgical management of open ankle fractures, were influenced by obesity. The occurrence of any complication, complication subtype, length of stay, and total hospital costs, were all evaluated as primary outcome variables. Of the overall cohort, 10.1% (n = 8.972) was constituted by patients with obesity. They identified higher odds of any complication, as well as longer length of stay and higher total costs among patients with obesity, after adjusting for patient and hospital features.
