Effect of long-term allopurinol therapy on left ventricular mass index in patients with ischemic heart disease: A cross-sectional study

Vascular Health and Risk Management Dec 12, 2019

Alem MM, et al. – Researchers performed an observational study with a cross-sectional design to determine the relationship between long-term (> 12 months) allopurinol therapy and left ventricular mass index (LVMI), and geometry in people commonly receiving standard treatments for ischemic heart disease (IHD). A full 96 individuals on standard anti-ischemic drug treatment (control group) and 96 people who were additionally taking allopurinol (minimum dose 100 mg/day) were recruited. In this population, treatment with allopurinol (presumably due to its anti-oxidant properties) exhibited a tendency to be related to smaller LVM in individuals with IHD and normal serum creatinine, along with superior glycemic control.
