Effect of long‐term use of unfractionated or low‐molecular‐weight heparin on bone mineral density in maintenance hemodialysis patients

Hemodialysis International Jun 14, 2020

Yang S, Niu Q, Gan L, et al. - Researchers performed this study among patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD), to determine how bone mineral density (BMD) in these patients could be influenced by unfractionated heparin (UFH) and low‐molecular‐weight heparin (LMWH). At baseline and 2 years later, dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry was performed to measure BMD, T‐score and Z‐score (BMDs) at the lumbar spine and femur neck. Although some patients in the UFH group were found to have reduced BMD, in the LMWH group, a slight rise in the BMD was noted on an average following 2 years. In the UFH group vs in the LMWH group, a lower mean change in BMD (in g/cm2) in the lumbar spine was noted. Overall, experts concluded a likely link of UFH with loss of lumbar spine BMD in patients receiving MHD.
