Effect of infectious disease consultation on mortality and treatment of patients with candida bloodstream infections: A retrospective, cohort study
The Lancet Infectious Diseases Dec 07, 2019
Mejia-Chew C, O'Halloran JA, Olsen MA, et al. - Researchers examined how infectious disease consultation and differences in management are related with mortality in candida bloodstream infections. They conducted a retrospective, single-center cohort study reviewing the medical charts of all patients with candida bloodstream infection (aged 18 years or older) admitted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St Louis, MO, USA), a tertiary referral center, from 2002 to 2015. Among 1,691 analyzed patients, 776 (45·9%) had an infectious disease consultation and 915 (54·1%) underwent no infectious disease consultation. Outcomes revealed lower mortality among patients with candida bloodstream infection receiving an infectious disease consultation. This might be due to the fact that a higher number of non-pharmacological, evidence-based interventions and lower amounts of non-treatment were evident among these individuals. Data thereby emphasize integrating an infectious disease consultation in the clinical care of patients with candida bloodstream infection.
