Effect of exercise, escitalopram, or placebo on anxiety in patients with coronary heart disease

JAMA Aug 23, 2021

Blumenthal JA, Smith PJ, Jiang W, et al. - Escitalopram is identified as safe and effective for reducing anxiety in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and high anxiety. However, exercise had less consistent beneficial effects on anxiety symptoms.

  • A randomized clinical trial was performed including 128 patients with CHD and anxiety.

  • Reduction in levels of anxiety and depression was evident in correlation with escitalopram, but not exercise, when compared with a placebo control.

  • CHD biomarkers of risk did not improve in correlation with performing exercise and receiving escitalopram.
