Effect of collaborative dementia care via telephone and internet on quality of life, caregiver well-being, and healthcare use: The Care Ecosystem randomized clinical trial
JAMA Internal Medicine Oct 04, 2019
Possin KL, Merrilees JJ, Dulaney S, et al. - Through randomized clinical trial of 1,560 individuals in rural and urban regions of three states recruited for 12 months between March 20, 2015 and February 28, 2017, experts ascertained whether the Care Ecosystem improves outcomes that persons with dementia (PWDs), their caregivers, and payers think are important beyond those accomplished with usual care. The 780 PWDs and 780 caregivers resided in California (n = 452), Nebraska (n = 284), or Iowa (n = 44). At 12 months, 655 of 780 dyads were still active, and 571 finished the 12-month survey. In comparison with usual care, the Care Ecosystem enhanced PWD quality of life, decreased emergency department visits, and reduced caregiver depression and caregiver burden. Thus, to additional usual care and alleviate the growing societal and economic burdens of dementia, efficient care management for dementia could be delivered from centralized hubs.
