Effect of benign prostatic hyperplasia on the development of spine, hip, and wrist fractures

Osteoporosis International May 10, 2019

Yang SC, et al. - Researchers examined 48,114 patients who were diagnosed as having benign prostatic hyperplasia from the claims data from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, for their risk of developing vertebral compression fracture, hip fracture, and wrist fracture. At a ratio of 4:1, they individually matched subjects of the control cohort with those in the benign prostatic hyperplasia cohort according to age and the index day. Findings revealed an increased risk of developing vertebral compression fractures in both the thoracic and lumbar spine and also hip fractures among patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. However, these patients displayed no increased risk of wrist fracture.
