Effect of antidepressant switching between nortriptyline and escitalopram after a failed first antidepressant treatment among patients with major depressive disorder
The British Journal of Psychiatry Jul 15, 2019
Köhler-Forsberg O, et al. - Researchers compared the switch between the tricyclic antidepressant nortriptyline and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor escitalopram among patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) experiencing side-effects or not responding to their first antidepressant. For up to 26 weeks, they followed 108 individuals who switched from nortriptyline to escitalopram or vice versa among 811 MDD adults treated with nortriptyline or escitalopram. The patients showed significant improvement in correlation to both switching options, suggesting this is a viable approach to achieve response among patients with MDD.
