Educational attainment and cardiovascular disease in the United States: A quasi-experimental instrumental variables analysis
PLoS Medicine Jul 11, 2019
Hamad R, et al. - In this investigation, researchers utilized a natural experiment—variation in US compulsory schooling laws—to test if education influences cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes and associated risk factors, exploring numerous pathways through which CVD can be impacted by education. The recognized connections between education and reduced smoking, depression, and heart disease and better high-density lipoprotein were supported, implying that health behaviors and stress were both crucial mechanisms. Higher body mass index and total cholesterol were also correlated with increased education. These results suggest that improving education may reduce the burden of heart disease.
