Echocardiographic parameters and renal outcomes in patients with preserved renal function, and mild- moderate CKD
BMC Nephrology Jul 16, 2018
Mavrakanas TA, et al. - This retrospective cohort study recruited all adult patients who had at least one trans-thoracic echocardiography between 2004 and 2014 to evaluate the echocardiographic characteristics of patients with preserved renal function and mild or moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) referred for echocardiography. In addition, the researchers assessed if echocardiographic parameters of left ventricular (LV) and right ventricular (RV) structure and function correlated with changes in renal function and mortality. Data reported that echocardiographic abnormalities were frequent even in early CKD. A higher prevalence of structural and functional LV and RV abnormalities was seen in patients with worse renal function. Composite renal outcome was independently linked with pulmonary artery pressure and the RV, but not the LV, echocardiographic parameters. For the care of patients with CKD, echocardiographic assessment especially of the RV might provide beneficial information.
