Early life socioeconomic position and mortality from cardiovascular diseases: An application of causal mediation analysis in the Stockholm Public Health Cohort
BMJ Open Jun 20, 2019
Hossin MZ, et al. – In this prospective cohort study involving 19,720 individuals who participated in the Stockholm Public Health Cohort survey in 2002 and were aged > 40 years, researchers quantified the mediating impact of adult social and behavioral mechanisms in the relationship between childhood socioeconomic position and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality via the employment of a weighting approach to mediation analysis. With respect to the risks of both CVD mortality and non-CVD mortality, the investigators did identify a difference by family social class; however, the risk of non-CVD mortality was not as strong compared with CVD mortality. Furthermore, a considerable mediating effect via adult social and behavioral factors on the early life social origin of mortality from CVDs and other causes were observed. Therefore, future research employing causal mediation analysis should consider additional factors for a fuller understanding of the mechanisms.
