Early detection of COPD: An opportunistic case finding study in smokers and ex-smokers visiting a medical centre
International Journal of COPD Jun 06, 2021
Rokach A, Bohadana A, Kotek O, et al. - This study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility and the yield of opportunistic early COPD case finding in visitors to a large medical centre. Researchers consecutively included adults aged ≥ 18 years visiting the Shaare Zedek Medical Center, in Jerusalem between May 2014 and June 2017. The study enrolled a total of 1,001 individuals (956 smokers; 45 ex-smokers). The results demonstrate that early COPD case finding was feasible and effective in distinguishing undiagnosed airflow obstruction among visitors to a medical centre. The outcomes suggest that smoking cessation counselling based on spirometry promoted a small but clinically meaningful cessation rate.
