Dysbindin-1 contributes to prefrontal cortical dendritic arbor pathology in schizophrenia
Schizophrenia Research May 24, 2018
Konopaske GT, et al. - Researchers examined if MARCKS, its regulatory protein dysbindin-1, and two proteins, identified using microarray data, CDC42BPA and ARHGEF6, were correlated with dendritic arbor pathology in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder subjects. They assessed relative protein expression in the DLPFC (BA 46) grey matter from subjects with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and unaffected control subjects. They noted 26% higher dysbindin-1b expression in schizophrenia subjects, the expression seemed to have an inverse correlation with basilar dendrite length and the number of spines per basilar dendrite, but not with dendritic spine density. Schizophrenia subjects showed 33% higher protein expression of CDC42BPA but, it did not correlate with any dendritic parameter. The groups did not differ regarding ARHGEF6 87 kDa isoform expression. Findings thereby suggest dysbindin-1b have a role in dendritic arbor pathology observed previously in the DLPFC in schizophrenia.
