Dual sensory impairment and perceived everyday discrimination in the United States
JAMA Ophthalmology Dec 14, 2020
Shakarchi AF, Assi L, Ehrlich JR, et al. - In a US population-based survey, researchers sought to evaluate the correlation of vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), and dual sensory impairments (DSI) with everyday discrimination. Between October 2019 and November 2019, data were analyzed. The sample involved 13,092 people. In the United States, older adults with VI or HI face greater discrimination on a regular basis than older adults with NSI, and those with DSI encounter far more discrimination than those with either VI or HI alone. Such findings provide insight into the social effects of sensory loss and demonstrate the need to recognise and resolve the reasons for discrimination against older adults with VI and HI.
