Dual‐center experiences with interventional closure of patent foramen ovale: A medium‐term follow‐up study comparing two patient groups aged under and over 60 years
Clinical Cardiology Feb 23, 2021
Nachoski D, Schroeder J, Almalla M, et al. - Researchers compared follow‐up results of patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure in patients with cryptogenic ischemic stroke who were over 60 years of age vs those of patients under 60 years of age in order to ascertain the safety as well as effectiveness of the procedure for both age groups. This analysis involved 293 patients who suffered a cryptogenic ischemic stroke and had a PFO verified by transesophageal echocardiography and who were scheduled for percutaneous closure of the PFO between 2014 and 2019. In both groups, there was an equal report of recurrent ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack, cardiac death, arrhythmias, and residual shunt. Overall, findings revealed that irrespective of the device employed, both the safety and effectiveness of interventional closure of PFO in patients over 60 years of age can be equivalent to that noted in patients under 60 years of age. To ensure optimal procedure selection in this older patient group, rigorous discussion as well as a case‐by‐case decision‐making process incorporating cardiologists and neurologists is warranted.
