Drive times to opioid treatment programs in urban and rural counties in 5 US states

Joudrey PJ, et al. - Researchers investigated drive times to the nearest opioid treatment programs (OTPs) in urban and rural counties in 5 US states with the highest county rates of opioid-related overdose mortality and contrasted drive times to federally qualified health centers as possible primary care methadone-prescribing locations and to dialysis centers as treatment locations for a various chronic disease needing regular commitment. For opioid use disorder, methadone could be dispensed only from US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration–certified OTPs, building access barriers in rural counties with a shortage of facilities. Moreover, Canada and Australia permit primary care prescribing and pharmacy dispensing of methadone to extend access.
