Does the use of amoxicillin/amoxicillin–clavulanic acid in third molar surgery reduce the risk of postoperative infection? A systematic review with meta-analysis
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Dec 02, 2018
Menon RK, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers determined the efficacy of amoxicillin/amoxicillin–clavulanic acid for reducing the risk of postoperative infection after third molar surgery and evaluated the adverse outcomes in these patients, as well as in healthy volunteers. They identified 11 studies that qualified for the qualitative analysis and eight studies that were suitable for meta-analysis. Outcomes suggest that the risk of infection may reduce significantly on administering amoxicillin–clavulanic acid and amoxicillin after third molar extraction. However, they recommend practicing caution in their use in third molar surgery considering the evidence of the negative impact of amoxicillin use on bacterial diversity and antibiotic resistance from recent clinical trials on healthy volunteers.
