Does gender influence postoperative outcomes in minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion?
Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques Mar 08, 2019
Khechen B, et al. - A sum of 169 candidates were analyzed to examine the relationship between gender and postoperative improvements in patient-reported outcomes (PRO) measures after minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS TLIF). Authors observed greater inpatient pain scores among females as compared to males (POD 0: 5.30 vs 4.69) with greater Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) (43.77 vs 36.22) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) leg (6.20 vs 5.27) scores. No relation of gender with variations in length of stay, perioperative complication rates, or narcotics consumption was noticed. They found similar improvements in pain and disability and rates of MCID achievement between genders. Hence, they did not suggest gender as a predictor of outcomes following MIS TLIF.
