Do donated corneas become transplanted corneas? The causes of discard in southern Brazil
Cornea Mar 10, 2019
Almeida de Freitas R, et al. - A total of 9290 donor corneas from 4645 donor candidates were estimated to quantify the number of rejected donated corneas with associated causes in this retrospective, cross-sectional, and analytic study in southern Brazil. Investigators recorded that 4235 corneas were discarded whereas 5055 were transplanted. They reported positive serology (49.6%), corneal viability (19.8%), corneal tissue quality (8.5%), and others (16.0%) as the main causes of discard. They also found more prevalence of discards in older age groups ie, 50–64 years and 65 or above age groups.
