Discordance between ureteroscopic biopsy and final pathology for upper tract urothelial carcinoma
The Journal of Urology Feb 23, 2018
Margolin EJ, et al. - Researchers, herein, assessed the discordance in ureteroscopic biopsy and surgical pathology for grading and staging of upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). They also established preoperative predictors of aggressive tumors. Results suggested that for muscle-invasive UTUC, clinically high-grade (cHG) tumors, subepithelial connective tissue invasion (cT1+) on biopsy, and advanced patient age were seen to be independent risk factors. Fifty-one percent were upgraded at surgery among patients with clinical low-grade disease on biopsy. An increased risk of upgrading in association with the presence of positive urine cytology; however, this was not statistically significant.
