Differential effects of L‐ and D‐phenylalanine on pancreatic and gastrointestinal hormone release in humans: A randomised crossover study
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Oct 09, 2020
Amin A, Frampton J, Liu Z, et al. - Since animal models indicate that the calcium‐sensing receptor mediates the glycemic and anorectic effects of L‐phenylalanine, but there is contradictory evidence with regard to L‐phenylalanine on appetite and the specificity of its effects on hormone release, researchers sought to analyze differential effects of L‐ and D‐phenylalanine on pancreatic and gastrointestinal hormone release in humans. Findings suggested that L‐phenylalanine was well‐tolerated and increased insulin and glucagon concentrations before meal ingestion at several points in time vs placebo and D‐phenylalanine. Ingesting L‐phenylalanine, but not D‐phenylalanine, raises insulin, glucagon and GIP concentrations without seeming to have a significant impact on appetite.
