Differences in clinical manifestations and increased severity of systemic lupus erythematosus between two groups of Hispanics: European Caucasians vs Latin American mestizos (data from the RELESSER registry)

Cruz BH, Alonso F, Alén JC, et al. - In this observational, multi-center, retrospective study of the demographic and clinical variables of people with SLE (n = 3,490) from 45 rheumatology units, experts ascertained the demographic and clinical features, severity, activity, damage, mortality, and co-morbidity of SLE in Hispanics belonging to the two ethnic groups resident in Spain, and recognized any disparities. In comparison with Hispanic LAM individuals, SLE in Hispanic European Caucasians individuals exhibited clinical variations. The latter more commonly suffered nephritis and greater severity indices. Thus, the study reveals that where lupus is involved, not all Hispanics are similar.
