Differences in clinical features of cluster headache between drinkers and nondrinkers in Japan
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Nov 28, 2019
Imai N, et al. - Researchers examined clinical features of cluster headache among drinkers vs nondrinkers. In this retrospective, observational study, they assessed 131 patients diagnosed with cluster headache between November 2004 and April 2018 at the Japanese Red Cross Shizuoka Hospital; of these 98 (75%) were drinkers, and 33 (25%) were nondrinkers. Relative to nondrinkers, drinkers experienced significantly more frequent conjunctival injection (43% vs 21%) but significantly less frequent nasal congestion (31% vs 52%), vomiting (11% vs 30%), and photophobia (29% vs 45%). Results here suggest a possible influence of drinking on the responses of the cranial autonomic reflex with respect to conjunctival injection or nasal congestion.
