Difference in carotid intima-media thickness between pre and postmenopausal women
Menopause Jan 04, 2019
Ieamtairat P, et al. - Researchers examined the influence of menopausal status on carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), the prevalence of increased CIMT, and the presence of carotid plaque in this analytical cross-sectional study of 61 premenopausal women and 61 postmenopausal women. Postmenopausal women displayed significantly higher mean CIMT of the common carotid artery than premenopausal women. As per multiple linear regression analysis for assessing potential risk factors for the alteration of mean CIMT, only menopausal status and body mass index were independently associated factors. Findings thus support evidence showing menopause transition as a critical period for subclinical atherosclerosis development.
