Dietary strategies to manage diabetes and glycemic control in youth and young adults with youth‐onset type 1 and type 2 diabetes: The SEARCH for diabetes in youth study
Pediatric Diabetes Aug 27, 2020
Sauder KA, Stafford JM, The NS, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is an association between dietary strategies used to manage diabetes over time and hemoglobin A1c in youth‐onset type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth observational study evaluated dietary strategies used by 1,814 candidates with diabetes (n = 1,558 type 1, n = 256 type 2) at two to three research visits over 5.5 years (range 1.7‐12.2). In type 1 diabetes, A1c was lower among those who started monitoring calories, often counted carbs, or sometimes chose low glycemic index foods compared with those with lower use, while those who never drank more milk had the lowest A1c. In type 2 diabetes, A1c was lower among those who often restricted high-fat foods or began counting carbohydrates than those who did so less. More frequent use over time has been associated with lower A1c in youth‐onset type 1 and type 2 diabetes for several dietary strategies, indicating these strategies can likely support diabetes management for this population. An investigation into the factors predicting the receipt of advice for specific strategies and the corresponding impact on the intake could be considered.
