Dietary patterns and mortality in a multinational cohort of adults receiving hemodialysis
American Journal of Kidney Diseases Sep 18, 2019
Saglimbene VM, Wong G, Teixeira-Pinto A, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers focused on the links of dietary patterns with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among 8,110 consecutive adults treated by hemodialysis. The participants were observed over a median duration of 2.7 years (18,666 person-years), revealing 2,087 deaths (958 cardiovascular). They identified 2 dietary patterns: “fruit and vegetable” and “Western”. In ascending quartiles, the estimated adjusted HRs for cardiovascular mortality were 0.94, 0.83, and 0.91 and for all-cause mortality were 0.95, 0.84, and 0.87 for the fruit and vegetable dietary pattern score. The corresponding estimates for the Western dietary pattern score were 1.10, 1.11, and 1.09 for cardiovascular death and 1.01, 1.00, and 1.14 for all-cause mortality. Findings did not corroborate a link between mortality and the extent to which dietary patterns were either high in fruit and vegetables or consistent with a Western diet in these patients.
