Dietary fibre intake in childhood or adolescence and subsequent health outcomes: A systematic review of prospective observational studies
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Oct 06, 2020
Reynolds AN, Diep HT, Montez J, et al. - This systematic review was undertaken to determine if higher fibre intakes during childhood or adolescence influence a broad range of intermediate markers of cardiometabolic risk or other health-related issues. Up to January 2020, online searches and manual searches were used to identify prospective observational studies reporting on childhood or adolescent intakes of dietary fibre, vegetables, fruit and refined or whole grains. Forty-five publications reporting on 44,354 candidates were identified from 30 cohort studies. Mean age at dietary assessment differed from 1 to 19.3 years. Given the inconsistency in results from cohort studies other than the lack of adverse effects, it seems reasonable to extrapolate guidelines for childhood fibre intake from relevant adult data.
