Dietary and serum vitamins A and E and colorectal cancer risk in Chinese population: A case–control study
European Journal of Cancer Prevention Jul 10, 2019
Luo H, et al. - Among 535 cases and 552 sex and age-matched (5-year interval) controls in Guangdong, China, researchers assessed the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in relation to serum concentrations and dietary intakes of vitamin A (VA) and vitamin E (VE). They reported 52 and 43% attenuation in CRC risk in relation to higher consumption of VA and VE. Serum retinol was found to be inversely related to CRC risk, with an adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.28. However, no statistically significant link was evident between serum α-tocopherol and CRC risk. Inverse associations of serum retinol and dietary VA and VE with CRC risk were observed in both sexes. The hypothesis that lower serum concentrations of retinol and lower consumptions of VA and VE were related to the risk of CRC in a Chinese population was supported in this study.
