Diagnostic usefulness of the protein energy wasting score in prevalent hemodialysis patients
Journal of Renal Nutrition Jul 15, 2018
Anton-Perez G, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers investigated the diagnostic validity of the score proposed by the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism to define the protein energy wasting (PEW) syndrome in patients undergoing dialysis. They used linear and logistic regression analyses to relate individual PEW syndrome criteria and the number of PEW syndrome categories to other objective markers of PEW: subjective global assessment, handgrip strength, bioimpedance-assessed body composition, and levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein. They found that PEW score may be used for diagnostic purposes in dialysis patients as it reflected systemic inflammation, malnutrition and wasting in these subjects.
