Developmental trajectories of behaviour problems and prosocial behaviours of children with intellectual disabilities in a population-based cohort
Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Jun 26, 2019
Bailey T, et al. - Researchers examined 555 children with intellectual disabilities (ID) between the ages of three and 11 years from the UK Millennium Cohort Study in order to determine their developmental trajectories for prosocial behaviors, internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Observations revealed a tendency for improvement in externalizing behavior problems and prosocial behaviors of children with ID over an 8-year period. Between five and seven years, slowing of these behavioral improvements was noted, possibly coinciding with school-related environmental changes. They noted significant differences between children with ID vs those with typical development regarding both the initial level of difficulties (exhibiting higher externalizing and internalizing behaviors, and lower prosocial behaviors) and subsequent development as they age, revealing relatively lower reductions in both externalizing and internalizing behaviors and lower raises in prosocial behaviors. Further, the findings underline the significant role of maternal mental health problems in the trajectory of child behavior problems.
