Determinants of short term fracture risk in patients with a recent history of low-trauma non-vertebral fracture
Bone Aug 28, 2017
Deloumeau A et al. – The current study identified risk factors associated with short–term subsequent non–vertebral fracture (NVF). Risk factors including age, history of fall, and previous severe NVF were identified as risk factors for prioritizing patients to receive treatment.
Methods
- The study enrolled patients from the Fracture Liaison Service, responsible for providing osteoporosis assessment.
Results
- A total of 950 patients with NVF (mean age 75 ± 12 years; 49% hip fracture) were enrolled.
- History of fall 1 year before the admission (odds ratio [OR] = 2.75, CI 95% 1.55Â4.93) and severe low–trauma NVF (OR = 2.54; CI 95% 1.45Â4.52) significantly associated with risk of inclusion in FLS for <3 years old fracture.
- BMI <20 kg/m2 (OR = 2.45, CI 95% 1.25Â4.87) and age >78 years (OR = 0.44, CI 95% 0.24Â0.80) associated with protection against risk of refracture.
