Detection of traumatic elbow arthrotomies: CT scan vs. saline load test
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery May 23, 2020
Kupchick TD, Yousif MJ, Colen AJ, et al. - A descriptive cadaveric laboratory study was designed to assume better sensitivity and specificity of detecting a traumatic elbow arthrotomy with a CT scan over a saline load test. Researchers thawed ten fresh-frozen cadaveric transhumeral upper extremity amputation specimens for trial. They brought specimens through CT scan prior to arthrotomy, arthrotomy was made, and then conducted post arthrotomy a repeat CT scan. Researchers advise assessing for traumatic elbow arthrotomies with a saline load test as the primary method of detection after this study and based on the recommendations of the brief literature on this topic.
