Dermatopathological characteristics of dermatofibromas from dermatoscopic clues
International Journal of Dermatology Jul 08, 2019
Genc Y, et al. - Since several types of dermatofibroma (DF) have been dermatopathologically identified and with dermatoscopic correlation, so far, dermatopathology has been predictable in limited studies, researchers have identified DFs with specific dermatoscopic structures and have identified the respective dermatopathological correlates. For this investigation, they evaluated the dermatoscopic and dermatopathologic correlation of 403 DFs. According to results, dermatoscopic pattern analysis exhibited typical patterns in 83.4% of DFs with atypical patterns in 16.6%. It was discovered that the typical pattern with peripheral reticular lines and central white structureless area was the most prevalent pattern observed in fibrocollagenous DFs, whereas non-fibrocollagenous kinds were more likely to have atypical patterns. While supporting some previous findings, the study resulted in new findings. The fact that a reactive inflammatory process with fibrosis is involved in the pathogenesis of DF is probable to have various impacts on dermatoscopic morphology. If the suspected DF identifies atypical dermatoscopic patterns, excisional biopsy may be prudent.
