Depression and risk of hip fracture: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies
Osteoporosis International Jun 09, 2019
Shi TT, et al. - Researchers performed this meta-analysis to clarify how depression is associated with hip fracture (HF). In addition, they sought for possible susceptible groups. They included 10 studies with 13 estimates, involving 375,438 participants and 4576 HFs. The analysis revealed a higher risk of HF among patients with depression vs non-depressed patients. The studies that were not adjusted for confounders (eg, antidepressant, bone mineral density, calcium intake, and smoking) vs studies that were adjusted for the corresponding confounding factors displayed higher overall hazard ratios. The studies reported HFs in higher frequency among European and male depression patients.
