Depression and risk of cognitive dysfunctions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

De Marchi F, et al. - Researchers assessed the occurrence of depression and risk of cognitive dysfunctions in this study that included 318 Italian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. They noted that 40 patients with ALS had depression before diagnosis. Of these patients, 29 had cognitive impairment over the course of the disease. Furthermore, the investigators observed a significant difference in survival time between ALS patients with depression before diagnosis vs ALS patients without previous depression.
