Depression and risk of Alzheimer's dementia: A longitudinal analysis to determine predictors of increased risk among older adults with depression
The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry May 16, 2018
Gallagher D, et al. - Researchers sought to determine predictors of increased risk of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) among older adults with depression. Until development of AD or loss to follow up, 1,965 older adults with depression and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) were followed. Increased risk of AD was noted to be independently associated with age, baseline cognition, APO E4 genotype, amnestic subtype of MCI and recency of depression (active depression within the last 2 years). Individuals with a combination of MCI and recently active depression should be considered for preventive interventions as they were noted to be at particularly high risk of AD.
