Depression and anxiety in adults with hidradenitis suppurativa: A systematic review and meta-analysis
JAMA Jun 12, 2019
Machado MO, et al. - Via conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 studies comprising 40,307 participants with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), researchers assessed the prevalence and odds for depression and anxiety in patients with HS. In all, they found that depression and anxiety are common comorbid mental health conditions in people with HS. Specifically, they noted a 16.9% prevalence of depression and a 4.9% prevalence of anxiety in this patient population. Although they were able to determine the odds ratio of depression among people with HS as 1.84, they were unable to determine the odds ratio for anxiety due to insufficient data. The researchers concluded that efforts promoting recognition, prevention, and management of these mental health conditions in this patient population are warranted.
