Demographics, comorbid conditions, and outcomes of patients with nonuremic calciphylaxis
JAMA Jan 05, 2019
Altman K, et al. - Researchers studied the demographics, comorbid conditions, and outcomes of patients with nonuremic calciphylaxis (NUC), defined as calciphylaxis in patients without renal disease, at the University of Washington hospitals and compared this information with prior published findings. Hyperparathyroidism, malignant neoplasm, alcoholic liver disease, and autoimmune disorders were the most common underlying conditions associated with NUC. Furthermore, exposure to some medications (like corticosteroids) might increase the risk of NUC, possibly by affecting the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB, receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand, or osteoprotegerin, which are involved in regulation of extraskeletal calcification.
