Dementia in the workplace: Are employers supporting employees living with dementia?
Aging and Mental Health Oct 19, 2019
Egdell V, et al. - Via this article, researchers sought to report whether employers consider dementia as a workplace concern and address the policies and/or practices available to support employees living with dementia. Thus, they acquire an insight into whether employers are meeting their human rights/legislative obligations. They employed a sequential mixed-methods approach with undertaking data collection in Scotland (United Kingdom). Employers across Scotland were administered an online survey, with 331 participating. They performed an interview with 30 employers, with the survey results informing the interview approach. Separate analysis of the survey and interview data was done and then these were combined and presented thematically. Following themes were identified: (1) Dementia as a workplace concern, (2) Support for employees living with dementia and (3) Employer policy development and awareness raising. Findings revealed that despite dementia awareness, this knowledge is not connected to employment situations. Little evidence was gained inferring consistent upheld of the rights of employees living with dementia.
