Delirium screening and mortality in patients with dementia admitted to acute hospitals
Aging and Mental Health Feb 28, 2020
Codling D, et al. - Given that delirium is associated with increased mortality in older adults, the researchers sought to analyze the impact of screening for delirium among inpatients with dementia. Secondary analysis of data from 10,047 individuals [mean age was 84 years (SD = 7.9)] admitted to 199 hospitals in England and Wales which participated in the third round of the National Audit of Dementia. One thousand two hundred eighty-five patients died during their admission to the hospital. According to findings, among people with dementia who are admitted to the hospital, screening for delirium and assessment of cognitive functioning are linked to lower mortality. While the authors can not be sure that these associations are causal, the findings support efforts being made to increase screening levels for delirium among people who are admitted to hospital with dementia.
