Day-case thyroid lobectomy parameters at a tertiary referral head and neck centre: A sensitivity and cost analysis
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Apr 09, 2020
Sheikh Z, et al. - Researchers described the use of sensitivity analysis modelling and cost analysis to determine and refine a patient cohort that safely meets the threshold for a new day-case thyroid lobectomy service at a tertiary referral head and neck centre. Between 2015 and Q2 2019, all cases of first-time thyroid lobectomy were identified. According to the following criteria: Age < 65 years, ASA grade < 3, BMI < 30 kg/m2 and distance from tertiary unit < / = 30 min, patients suitable for day-case thyroid lobectomy were identified retrospectively. Two hundred fifty-nine thyroid lobectomy procedures have been performed, of which 173 met the inclusion criteria. Sensitivity analysis showed that, after increasing all day-case parameters by four increments, eligibility increased from 47 to 112 patients, with only one outpatient to inpatient conversion. By sensitivity analysis, they estimated that 64.7% of the patient population could safely be given day-case thyroid lobectomy.
