Dairy consumption during adolescence and endometriosis risk
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Oct 23, 2019
Nodler JL, et al. - Researchers examined how consumption of dairy foods in adolescence influences the risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis. In this prospective cohort study, the Nurses’ Health Study II, data was prospectively collected since 1989. Participants when aged 34–51 years, in 1998, completed a 124 item food frequency questionnaire about their high school diet. A diagnosis of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis was reported in 581 cases among 32,868 premenopausal women from 1998 to 2013. As per findings, the risk of subsequent endometriosis diagnosis may reduce in correlation with dairy consumption, specifically yogurt and ice cream intake, in adolescence. The analysis suggests a 32% lower risk of laparoscopically confirmed endometriosis during adulthood among women who reported consumption of more than 4 servings per day of dairy foods during adolescence. Consumption of 2 or more servings of yogurt per week as an adolescent was associated with a 29% lower risk of endometriosis diagnosis relative to consuming less than 1 serving per week. Further, consumption of 1 or more servings per day of ice cream per day during adolescence was related to a 38% lower risk of endometriosis diagnosis relative to consuming less than 1 serving per week.
