Cytocompatibility, bioactive potential and antimicrobial activity of an experimental calcium silicate-based endodontic sealer
International Endodontic Journal Feb 05, 2019
Zordan-Bronzel CL, et al. - Data were studied to examine the cytocompatibility, bioactive potential, antimicrobial and anti-biofilm activities of an experimental calcium silicate-based endodontic sealer in comparison to TotalFill BC Sealer and AH Plus. Researchers evaluated the cytocompatibility by methyl tetrazolium (MTT) and neutral red (NR) assays, after exposure of the Saos-2 cells to the sealer extracts for 24 h. They observed that experimental sealer, TotalFill BC and AH Plus were not cytotoxic to Saos-2, as compared to the negative control. They noticed an association of experimental sealer and TotalFill BC with a greater decline of E. faecalis, and eliminated C. albicans in direct contact test (DCT) on planktonic cells (DCTPC). They concluded that experimental calcium silicate-based sealer was cytocompatible, bioactive, antimicrobial against E. faecalis and C. albicans, and efficient against E. faecalis biofilms, with potential for use in root canal treatment.
