Cystic fibrosis heterozygosity does not impact ovarian reserve or assisted reproductive technology outcomes

Fertility and Sterility Apr 12, 2019

Sekhon L, et al. - Researchers examined female cystic fibrosis (CF) carriers regarding ovarian reserve and ART treatment outcomes. In the retrospective, cohort study, CF carriers (n=135) were compared to non-carriers (n=1214). Evaluation of specific genomic questions, such as whether CFTR mutation is a genetic determinant of female infertility, seems possible in view of the advancement in personalized medicine to include routine expanded carrier screening. Women with single-allele CF mutations displayed no negative impact on the ovarian reserve, response, embryo quality, and overall treatment outcome. A single allele mutation in the CFTR gene seemed not influencing female reproductive function and/or gametes.
