Current status of cervical cytology during pregnancy in Japan
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jan 13, 2021
Suzuki S, Hayata E, Hoshi SI, et al. - Uterine cancer screening during pregnancy is subsidized by public funds in Japan. Via this study, they sought to report on the current status of the results of cervical cytology conducted during pregnancy in Japan. From 1,292 obstetrical facilities, they gained valid information on cervical cytology in 238,743 pregnant women who delivered between October 2018 and March 2019. The implementation rate of 86.8% was noted in Japan for cervical cytology during pregnancy. During pregnancy, abnormal cervical cytology was prevalent in 3.3% in total and 4.9% using a spatula/brush with liquid-based cytology (LBC). Observations revealed a significantly higher prevalence of positive high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) in teenagers with atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) relative to women of other ages. Given a drop in HPV vaccine coverage to less than 1% in Japan, they suggest the necessity for a further study with various conditions to improve the accuracy of cervical cancer screening during pregnancy.
