Cumulative risk of end-stage renal disease among patients with type 2 diabetes: A nationwide inception cohort study
Diabetes Care Feb 01, 2019
Finne P, et al. - In this study, researchers evaluated the long-term cumulative risk of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) after diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Participants in the study consisted of 421,429 patients who received a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in 1990-2011 and were followed up until the end of 2013. Of the 421,429 patients with type 2 diabetes, 1,516 developed ESRD and 150,524 died in 3,458,797 patient-years of follow-up. They found that the cumulative risk of ESRD was 0.29% at 10 years and 0.74% at 20 years from diagnosis. Among patients with type 2 diabetes, the cumulative risk of ESRD is minimal vs their risk of death. Patients who received a diagnosis of diabetes at an older age were found to have a reduced risk for ESRD due to higher competitive mortality.
