Cross-sectional and longitudinal factors influencing physical activity of 65 to 75-year-olds: A pan European cohort study based on the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE)
BMC Geriatrics Apr 22, 2018
Lubs L, et al. - Researchers used data of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) in order to determine the prevalence of insufficient physical activity (IPA) in 65 to 75-year-olds in Europe and to identify factors related to IPA in cross-section and to determine longitudinal risk factors for IPA in prior active persons. A wide variation was noted between countries with respect to the prevalence of IPA in 65–75-year-olds. Socioeconomic factors as low educational level (own and parental) and financial difficulties and health-related factors as number of chronic diseases were found to be statistically significantly associated with IPA. Only grip strength and Body Mass Index (BMI) were identified as statistically significant risk factors for IPA. Overall, physical activity (PA) promotion programs for older adults should incorporate the heterogeneity of health status and physical condition that can typically occur in this age group.
