COVID-19 morbidity and severity in patients with age-related macular degeneration: A Korean nationwide cohort study
American Journal of Ophthalmology Jun 09, 2021
Yang JM, Moon SY, Lee JY, et al. - In this Korean nationwide cohort study, researchers sought to determine the potential link between age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a representative chronic age-related degenerative disease of the retina associated with inflammation and aging, and susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 outcomes. Between January 1, 2020, and May 15, 2020 (excluding self-referral), data were collected from the Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service of Korea, including all patients older than 40 years who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing in South Korea. The unmatched cohort included 135,435 patients who were tested for SARS-CoV-2; 4,531 (3.3%) were positive for SARS-CoV-2; 5,493 (4.1%) had AMD. The findings from a Korean nationwide cohort suggest that clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of COVID-19 susceptibility to severe clinical outcomes in patients with exudative AMD. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the link between COVID-19 pathogenesis and chronic neurological disorders.
