COVID-19 and pneumothorax: A multicentre retrospective case series
European Respiratory Journal Sep 14, 2020
Martinelli AW, Ingle T, Newman J, et al. - As pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum are identified complicating cases of COVID-19 requiring hospital admission, researchers sought on the largest case series of patients with both these pathologies that includes non-ventilated patients. They retrospectively included 71 patients from 16 centers in UK with inclusion criteria limited to a diagnosis of COVID-19 and the presence of either pneumothorax or pneumomediastinum. Of these cases, 60 patients had pneumothoraces (six also with pneumomediastinum), whilst 11 patients had pneumomediastinum alone. Observations suggest pneumothorax as a complication of COVID-19 and do not indicate it to be an independent marker of poor prognosis. They thereby emphasize continuation of active treatment in these patients where clinically possible.
